What Is a 3D Scan, and Can It Harm My Baby?

The 3D optical scanning used in cranial orthosis treatment is safe, radiation-free and painless. Here are the technical details.

What is 3D optical scanning?

A 3D optical scanner is a device that measures the shape of your baby's head using a structured light pattern. It is completely different from X-ray, MRI or CT scans — it involves no radiation.

How does it work?

  • A thin cap is placed on your baby's head (to flatten the hair)
  • A handheld scanner is moved around the head for 20–30 seconds
  • A 3D model of the head is created on the computer
  • CVAI, CI, circumference and symmetry measurements are calculated automatically

Is it safe?

Absolutely. 3D optical scanning uses only visible light — no more energy than a mobile phone camera. It has no physical effect on your baby whatsoever.

Duration and comfort

The whole procedure takes 5–10 minutes. Your baby can stay awake and sit on your lap. The system can handle movement, too.

Results report

After the scan, the specialist orthotist goes over the results with you — which category your baby's head shape falls into, how severe it is, whether a helmet is needed and for how long. Clear and transparent.
